If you're not black, you don't understand and would never understand or be able to relate. Please do not try to put in a few sentences how you think I feel towards this whole situation. Especially if you're going to say that "race isn't an issue."

I'm saying race isn't an issue in this case. And btw, every race has stereotypes. I have a black best friend and I grew up with her and the rest of her siblings, so I do understand In a way that people are as/sholes and think that just because someone is black means that they have done/are doing something wrong. So stop acting like I don't know anything because I do. Let's be honest now. If Trayvon was white you wouldn't give a sh/t. Would you?

Race is an issue because it shows how Trayvon represents every Black person in America. It's nice that you have a Black best friend, what do you want now, a race card? Your "I know someone black so I know their struggles" pass? You don't know the struggles of Black people, you don't know the discrimination first-hand. You don't know the stigma that comes with being Black. I don't know why you want to so desperately be Black all of a sudden. If Trayvon was white, I would care, because no caring over someone's death is basically lacking compassion and being a sh1tty person. But, because Trayvon was Black, it holds more significance to me.

Now, if you want to continue to be condescending, I don't want to listen.

White is literally a blanket term. If you want more terms to describe him, he's white passing and if anything racially ambiguous which affords him more privileges than being Black does. Zimmerman could have continued driving, yet he decided to get out of his car. He cannot claim it was self defense when he put himself in a situation of stalking someone. If this was a white kid, it would receive no publicity because the Black shooter would be jailed almost immediately. (White privilege.)
reply -2
rebecca* 1 decade ago on quote #6825936

"He cannot claim it was self-defense" yes he can.
Pictures show he was badly beaten and an eyewitness has confirmed Trayvon was the one in control of the fight. Regardless of whether he should have followed him, regardless of why he followed him, he was the one that was attacked and he acted in a case of self-defense.
And were is your proof that if it was a black shooter they would be immediately convicted? What are you basing that off of? Media stereotypes and the general idea of or the fact that it actually happens because last I checked, you can only convict someone if they have gone through trial.

Also I thought I blocked you how were you able to respond to my comment

What is suspicious about wearing a hood? And why wouldn't Trayvon belong there? Trayvon was staying with his father and the father's girlfriend. If anything, Trayvon was defending himself. In the phone call Trayvon made with his friend, he states that he was being followed by someone creepy -- Trayvon was scared. Trayvon isn't allowed to defend himself after being stalked though, is he? White hispanic isn't a false term, it's literally describing what Zimmerman is. He comes from a Spanish speaking background (making his ethnicity Hispanic) but his skin color is White. Race has to do with skin color.
It becomes a race issue because Trayvon stands for all Black people in America. Black people can literally be stalked and killed for wearing their hood.

And really, you're not going to be able to convince me of this being a racial issue because had this been a white kid it would never have made the news, which means we have NO idea just how many times something similar has happened to a white kid because it was never blown up by the media the way this was.

rebecca* 1 decade ago on quote #6825936

It isn't a race issue though.
If you paid attention to the case, it was an issue of Trayvon looking suspicious as anyone walking with a hood up in a place they don't belong would, and attacking a man. Whether that man should have followed him or not is debatable, but he acted entirely in self-defense as an eyewitness has said.
The court case and the over-all ruling is not connected to a racial issue.
The only reason anybody is saying that it is is because the media blew it up into a thing and made it out to be one. They even created a false term to describe Zimmerman, "white hispanic", to mould it into a race issue.

No, it isn't ignorant.
To be truly unprejudiced is to treat Trayvon as if his skin colour did not matter, as if he were any other colour of skin, which is what most informed people are doing.
That's what the jury did. They didn't take his skin colour into account because it has absolutely nothing to do with the case.
Obsessing over it and trying to use it as a point to convict a man is wrong.

His skin colour is not white, if you have actually seen him you can SEE he is hispanic.
And he was not defending himself, he could have continued walking, but he didn't. He stopped and attacked Zimmerman and quite horribly injured him, as photographic evidence can show.
And really, you're not going to be able to convince me of this being a racial issue because had this been a white kid it would never have made the news, which means we have NO idea just how many times something similar has happened to a white kid because it was never blown up by the media the way this was.

Trayvon was defending himself against a man who was stalking him.

This isn't your quote, so I can still reply because I'm not blocked by the OP.

Although I do not agree with you at this point I think we really oughta agree to disagree.
I'm sure you are a lovely person, I just don't agree with you and I don't see a point in continuing this conversation as neither of us is being swayed by the other and unless we do just end it on agree to disagree, I feel like it won't have a good ending.

My phone autocorrected me. So before you start getting all worked up over something you should really take a breather.

Don't tone police, I won't take a "breather" over the fact that a Black teenager is dead and his murderer gets to walk free.

I don't get it, are you calling me a murderer? I thought we were talking about autocorrect.

Jumping a fence isn't trespassing. If you are staying there, it's not trespassing.

Self defense? You do realize that Trayvon was followed by Zimmerman, even after the dispatcher told him not to, right? Why doesn't Trayvon get to be scared?

No, but your previous actions have.
You calling me ignorant when you, yourself is ignorant is just ironic.

I'm not ignorant. Race has nothing to do with a fair trial. Zimmerman is not guilty. Simple as that.

Lacking compassion? Yeah. Totally. What about having compassion for an innocent man?

Compassion for a man who decided to stalk and follow a boy for no reason except for being "suspicious" (read: code word for black)? Zimmerman deserves to suffer a long, long life of agony and pain.
