I get out of the car, and rain splashes against my face. So much
for it letting up... I walk around the car to where Dad is
getting everything out of back, putting it in a pile. I
swing my back pack up and around my shoulders. Amanda, Natasha,
and I grab our stuff, then head over to the "Check In"
area. We dump our stuff with the rest of the bags, trunks,
pillows, and blankets.
"Eee! Amanda!" some girl shrieks.
"Hey Becca!" Amanda says and gives the girl a friendly
hug. "What bunk are you in?"
"8A," Becca says, checking the standard three page
information packet handed out upon check-in. "You?"
"I don't know yet," Amanda says, then turns to
Natasha and me. "Let's check in."
We head over to the table where two girls with ponytails sit with
paper and t-shirts.
"Amanda, Cat, and Natasha Queensley," Amanda says,
pointing to both of us.
"Ah, welcome back, Queensleys! Here are your information
packets and t-shirts. Size small for you all, I
assume? And Amanda, here is your Junior Counselor in Training
badge."
I grab my information packet, and look at the top right corner
where "7B" is circled in red ink. I smile then the
three of us walk back to where our parents stand, chatting with
some other parents.
"Time to say goodbye?" Dad says, pulling us all into a
group hug.
"Bye, Dad. Bye, Mom." The hugging continues for a few
minutes, then we say our final goodbyes.
My parents are finally gone. I get my stuff together and carry it
pack mule style down the rest of the dirt road with my sisters.
As we walk over a hill, I get my first good look at Lake Windsor.
It sparkles under the late afternoon light.
As we reach the bottom of the hill, we're really into the
camp. The main building is on the left, with some trails behind
it. Then a little up ahead is the mess hall, or cafeteria, with
the infirmary attached. Then there are the tennis courts, swings,
a seesaw, and of course tether-ball. Then up on a hill is the
recreation building. It's huge. It has a big room with a
piano, pool and pingpong, board games, and a bunch of other
stuff.
People are everywhere, running around, saying hello after a long
year apart. I see a bunch of familiar faces, and some new ones,
too.
Finally we're at the bunks. There are 16 of them, 8 for the
girls and 8 for the boys. The girls bunks are on the left side of
the bank, facing the lake, and the boys on the right side. There
are other cabins scattered throughout camp as well that have been
added as more people began to come.
There are two sides the cabins, A and B, with a bathroom in the
middle. The showers are off in another building, unfortunately.
The front doors to the cabins are on the opposite side of the
lake. Then the other side of the cabin has a deck that goes over
the lake.
"Here's your bunk, Tasha," Amanda says as we
approach the fourth cabin on the right side. "You all set?
We'll check in later."
Amanda and I continue on until we reach the last two cabins.
"This is where we part," I say.
She winks then walks off. I drag my stuff up the stairs and into
the cabin 7B. Instantly, I find myself wrapped in at least three
pairs of arms.
"Cat! You're so late, we were getting wicked
nervous!" the tall, scrawny girl with red hair and a smokey
voice says.
"Don't worry, Daisy. I would never skip camp," I
say as I survey the room. All of the six bunks are taken except
two. I throw my stuff on the bottom bunk, sighing with relief.
I'm not a top bunk kind of girl. I turn around and face the
four girls, Daisy, Ringo, Amy, and Leena. Daisy is staring at me
with her big green eyes. Ringo is your average crazy chick with
no conscience. She has crazy curly blonde hair and these bright
blue eyes that can make your blood go cold if she looks at you
the wrong way. Amy is gentle as a flower, and always has her
books. Her hair that was normally brown and frizzy was now
gleaming and wavy. Leena is who you want to turn to if you're
in need of some juicy gossip. She knows everyone and everything.
And she's gorgeous; she's skinny but curvy, tan, with
straight, long dark blond hair. Even though she's a gossip,
she's always there if you need someone to talk to.
"So, how was your year?" Ringo asks, bounding over and
grabbing me in a painfully tight hug.
"It was good," I say, gasping for air.
"That's good, I've got a great story to tell-"
Ringo stops short. She turns her head to look at something. My
jaw drops. In the doorway is absolutely the most gorgeous girl
you have ever seen. Tall, like Amazon woman tall, with dark skin,
dark hair, dark eyes, and perfect dark eyebrows. She's
clad in a short blue dress and sunglasses, even though it's
still raining.
"This is cabin 7B, right?" she asks in a serious
tone.
"Sure is," Ringo says.
"Well, then hi roomies."
She walks in, and following her are a middle aged couple, clearly
her parents. They drop her two trunks and three suitcases in the
middle of the room. Daisy, Ringo, Amy, Leena and I watch silently
as they say their goodbyes.
"So," the girl says. "I'm Arabella. I'm
going to need a bottom bunk.
"Sorry, they're all taken," Amy says softly.
"Uh. I said I NEED a bottom bunk. Clearly this one is up for
grabs, it's not made yet."
"Yeah, that's because I just got here," I say.
"I've already claimed it. Sorry."
"Rule number one: never say sorry," she says, then
slowly her lips turn upward into a smile. "The bottom bunk
is mine."
"Fine, I like the top bunk anyways," I mumble.
"Good. I don't want to make trouble."
The five of us stare at each other as Arabella rummages through
her purse.
This is going to be a rough summer, I think to
myself.
It's not just gonna be about the bitchy bunkmate, so
don't lose hope yet. I'll write more
tomorrow!
