"What
the hell?" Joey yelled out, standing up, almost knocking
over the table. I stood up more slowly and carefully, and stood
up on my tiptoes trying to see what was happening.
"What is it?" I asked, still not being able to see over
the heads of the people in front of us.
"Nobody move!" someone shouted, and that only caused
more panic. "Somebody has been shot, and another stabbed.
Everything will be just fine if you all would calmy-" but he
got cut off by the screams of the people rushing out the
doors.
"Oh dear Lord," Joey groaned. "We're never
going to get out of here. You just had to skip the movie,
didn't you?"
I crossed my arms and glared at him. "It's not like we
were going to see anything good. Just Paranormal Activity. Heard
it's crap."
"Well I wouldn't know because we didn't go see
it." He was seething with anger. "And now I might never
know, because who knows if we're going to come out of this
alive?"
I rolled my eyes at his dramatics. "Look, the police are
already here. It's going to be fine. Jesus Christ, just shut
up, okay? Thanks."
He looked as if he wanted to kill me. And maybe he did, who
knows?
"Let's just get out of here," he finally said.
That's when I looked around and realize the whole place was
empty besides the police and-of course- the victim. The medics
were apparently on their way, and until then the woman was left
to bleed to death, apparently. Joey grabbed my hand before I
could argue anymore and pulled me out the door and to his
car.

We rode the
rest of the way in silence after that. When we got to the bowling
alley he helped me out of the car like a gentleman, and then
slammed the door after I got out, like he was extremely
mad.
"I didn't get my purse," I said, raising an
eyebrow. He knew what that meant, and he sighed.
"I'm sorry," Joey apologized. "That...I
don't know what's gotten into me. I'm always so
different around you."
"Good different or bad different?" I teased.
"I've yet to figure it out."

As we were waiting for our food, he took my hand, almost
subconiously. He didn't seem to notice he was doing it, as he
read over something on his phone. I didn't want to disturb
him so I just let him be, and it actually felt kind of nice, even
though my stomach felt like it was going to explode.
He finally looked up and smiled at me. "You're beautiful
right now."
"Am I not always beautiful?" I questioned.
"Oh no, you are, believe me. But right now...I don't
know." He sighed audibly. He then looked down at intertwined
fingers, and let go quickly, a blush creeping up his face.
"Sorry."
I laughed, "No need to apologize. My hands were cold
anyway."
"I can't believe you wanted to skip the movie," he
thought aloud.
I shrugged, not really caring. "After you beat me in all
three games in bowling, I was feeling like a need some
food."
"Does food make you feel better?"
But before I could answer there was a loud crash, a scream, and
the whole restaurant erupted in chaos.

"MOUNTAIN CLIMBING?!" I screeched,
prepared to faint.
Joey began to laugh, apparently amused by my fear. "I'm
only kidding. Chill. We're actually going bowling, then to a
movie. Maybe dinner after that, depending on what time it
is."
"Oh thank god," I said happily. "I thought you had
finally gone completely bonkers."
"Oh I have, I just don't show it," he teased, his
crooked smile coming out again, giving me more butterflies.
I rolled my eyes and went to grab my coat from the rack.
"Who's driving?"
"You, I don't have my liscense."
"Wait...what? Why not?" I wrinkled my eyebrows,
confused by this. "You're eighteen."
"I don't need to drive in New York, I just take a bus,
or a taxi." He shurgged, as if it were no big deal.
"What if there is no bus that's where you're going,
and you can't haul a taxi?"
"Then I explain to my boss why I'm late, or something.
He normally understands, because it happens to everyone, seeing
as most people don't have cars. And sometimes even the buses
are too full, so I hav to get the next bus," he
explained.
"I would hate that," I said, biting my lip.
"Anyway, are we going? I still hate you."
He chuckled and nodded, leading the way to the door. Joey opened
the door and held it open for me like a gentleman, before
following me out. "I miss your...humour."
"...Am I supposed to be offended by that?" I raised my
eyebrow at him, getting in the driver's side of my crappy
car.
"Would it help my case?"
"No," I giggled.
"Then no, don't take offense to that." He buckled
up, and took my hand, forcing my to look at him. "I
don't know why, but I get the feeling I won't be able to
leave on Monday, after my visit is over.
My heart sunk at that. Only seven days with Joey? That's not
exactly the most time in the world. "Then don't
leave."
He laughed without humour. "It's not exactly that easy.
I have to go back to my dad, can't just leave him there like
that. And I have to finish high school to get into some of the
colleges I want."
"Oh." I was hurt; hurt that he didn't want to stay.
"Have you applied to Julliard?"
He sighed, and leaned back against the seat. "Yeah, but they
haven't replied, and I'm thinking that I most likely
haven't gotten in, and they're laughing at me."

"Yeah,
you should be mad at me," he agreed. "I left you, like
a dick, and now I show up, like a dick. But I haven't stopped
thinking about you. Three years now, and you've never left my
mind, not once." He looked up at me, and gave me the saddest
look I've ever seen. "I screwed up."
I wanted to agree. I wanted to call him every foul name I'd
ever heard. I wanted to hit him with everything in sight, and I
wanted to tell him the get out of my house, and how dare he just
show up uninvited and expect everything to be how it was three
years ago?
But I didn't. I just sat there, unable to move or speak. I
was in shock.
He waved a hand in front of my face.
"...Annabelle?"
I blinked and my mind started working properly again. "Why
are you doing this now? I'm about to graduate high school,
and we'll go our separate ways for college. Heck, we've
already gone our separate ways; you never even called!"
"I added you on Facebook," he joked, and I whacked him
with a pillow. "Ow!"
"That's not funny!" I pouted, crossing my arms.
"I'm being deadly serious here."
"And so am I." He looked at me calmly, appearing to be
waiting for the verdict.
"No you're not."
"You're right, I'm not." He smiled crookedly at
me. "But Anna, I love you."
"Joey..."
"No, don't say anything." He shook his head, as if
to clear it. "I don't want to hear that you don't
love me. Hell, I don't even want to hear that you do love me.
Right now, I just want to make up for leaving you."
"Alright," I agreed, sighing. "What do you have
planned?"
He grinned evilly. "How do you feel about mountain
climbing?"

1
"Isn't she lovely, isn't she
wonderful?" I sang into my hairbrush, staring into my
own eyes in the mirror. It was my dream to be singer, but singing
like this wasn't going to get me anywhere.
I jumped at the sound of banging on my door and immediately
dropped the hair brush to the ground, and turned around,
mortified.
"Y-yes?" My voice was squeaky, and I cleared my throat.
"I mean, yes?" That's better.
"Just came to see which animal you were torturing this
time," my brother laughed, high-fiving his best friend,
Brett.
I rolled my eyes and picked up a pillow off the bed, and hurtled
it at my brother, but missing by nearly a mile.
"Oh, and someone's here for you. It's a guy,"
Brett said, earning a slap from my brother.
"You weren't supposed to tell her that!" my brother
scolded. "He was supposed to wait forever, then get bored
and leave, forever hating my sister."
"Forever's a long time," Brett argued, earning
another slap.
I rolled my eyes and brushed past them both, starting down the
stairs, before stopping and turning around. "What
guy?"
"I don't know, but he's cute." Another
slap.
"You guys are a great help," I said, disgusted, and
started down the stairs again. I came to a stop in the living
room, where there was a gorgeous boy sitting on the arm of my
couch.
"Hey." The one word made my heart flutter.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, finding my voice.
The gorgeous man was my ex-best friend, Joey. I had a huge crush
on him, and then he moved. Guess I still kind of have a crush on
him, judging by the butterflies in my stomach.
"Isn't a guy allowed to visit his best friend?" He
sounded hurt, as if the idea of me not wanting him here offended
him.
"I...I didn't mean it like that. It's just, I
thought you moved. Three years ago. And you never called. And I
should be mad at you...but I'm not?" I began to ramble
and I stopped myself, before I said something I
regretted.
