This interface seems to have broken years ago. I will try to make it work again. It was designed for desktop computers and may be a pain to use on mobile.

I know I'm late to the party but how do I add texts on top of the picture? so far I can only add text next to it. it's been awhile since I've been on witty, starting to get back into it and want to try the new stuff :D

The image is a background for the text's container. Click the "code" button under the quote to see how it works -- copy and paste into the quote editor to try it out.

I miss wittyprofiles. Witty was my escape from all the teenage drama. I'm heartbroken that it's died down.

Will there an option to save the quotes on a mobile device and access them later on a PC to do more detailed HTML and CSS work?

So far the only complications I've had is when I try to make a new line by pressing the enter key, I've tried also hding the shift key as instructed and still nada. I'm on mobile using my browers app and everytime I press enter to make a new line it makes another background right below the first one and places my text there at the top of the new pictures. Its a cool effect if I was trying to do it,I did find out if you press the space bar button a whole lot of times it allows you to place the desired text in the next line. The enter button does work though when there is no background chosen, but once I chose the background all the lines get smooshed together. It would also be great if there was an option to chose where the text aligns, instead of in just the middle, but if not the press-the-space-bar-a-bunch of-times method seems to work great.
Other then those things the editor looks great, has beautiful backgrounds and will definitely spice the website up!

FYI - I fixed that enter key problem. I'll find an easy way to get text alignment in there without over-complicating things.

Steve, when you make a quote using that are you supposed to be able to post it or is it just to look at how it's going to look?
reply 0
Steve 8 years ago on quote #7053770

it doesn't actually post the quote -- I'm just looking for feedback on it. What do you think?

Not really, that was my only problem with it, maybe a little more variety in the pictures behind so not everybody has the same kind of quotes.
Or maybe an option for different fonts. That would be cool

Images would actually be pretty cool -- if quotes were turned into images they would be really conducive to sharing on Tumblr, Pinterest, etc, and really easy to export, save, and reuse in different places. A tiny, clean 'wittyprofiles' watermark would be great for bringing people to the site, too.

Not spying, though I was stalking you on the internet for a bit.

(I'm curious what Witty's built in (languages, frameworks), and also a bit curious where your livelihood comes from. (Not Witty, I assume.))

Exciting that you're working on it!

Witty is built on the old LAMP stack: Linux (Centos to be specific), Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Most everything has been built from scratch with the exception of the wysiwyg editor and the bootstrap framework (which I'd love to rip out because it's bloated and Witty doesn't use enough of it to make it worth it). I also use Amazon Web Services for the database and some image hosting.

Witty has always just been one of my side projects -- a hobby really. I contract for a boring company building and maintaining their internal sales web apps. Back in 2011 Witty grew pretty big and I made a few bucks from the advertising, but the hosting costs also grew at the same time. Some months, Witty's total hosting bill was more than $2000. Traffic has waned since then and the bills are much lower now. I haven't checked in a few months, but I'm not sure the advertising income even covers hosting costs anymore.

Hm. I should learn PHP. And interesting, I've only ever seen CentOS used once, on a machine in a college lab.

What exactly does Witty use bootstrap for? Buttons, form fields, page layout perhaps? Maybe I'll take a crack at reimplementing some of bootstrap's things for fun. I'm kind of tired of the way bootstrap looks, too...

Thank you for sating my curiosity. Witty is an impressive side project.

PHP is widely used, but despised by a lot of programmers. It has its faults, but it's good if you want to cobble something together quickly. Don't let me deter you from checking it out. I write PHP code every day. If you want to learn how to program, the best bet is to tinker around with a lot of languages so you can see the similarities and differences. It also helps you recognize the best tool for the job in the working world. Python can be a fun place to start because of the huge number of packages available (https://pypi.python.org/pypi). It's kind of like how Perl was back in the day (and some believe still is).
