// Puddles in the Rain \\
Chapter
27
The next morning I woke up as the
sun was coming over the edge of the roofs of the houses, the sky
a mix of pink, yellow, and blue, a light drizzle of rain falling
down.
"Hey."
I jumped at the sound of Drew's voice, and I looked over my
shoulder to see him sleepily grinning at me.
"Hey."
"Want to go see if we can work things our with
Hilary?"
I stopped admirering the sky and looked back down at him,
smiling. It was like he read my mind.
"How are you going to fix it?"
I asked as Drew stood up and reached for my hand, walking down
the sidewalk to Hilarys.
"Well, I have an idea."
I nodded and he squeezed my hand. When he squeezed it, I knew it
would work out. We walked in silence until we got to Hilarys,
just listening to the birds in the trees, the wind blowing past
our ears, the sound of our feet scuffing up against the
sidewalk.
"So, I think I know how to work this out."
Drew told me as we walked up to her front door, ringing the
doorbell.
"Hmm?"
"So, I know this sounds weird, but you need to go hide in
the bushes."
I stopped smiling at him and frowned.
"But-"
"I know what I'm doing."
He flashed me a grin before pushing me down the steps and into
the bushes that lined the side of the house.
"Hello?"
I could hear Hilary's voice, no less cheerful than before, as
she opened the door. I held my breath as Drew told her who he
was.
"So, you're the one that was slobbing all over her all
night."
I could hear the snarkyness in her voice, and I could just tell
that she was crossing her arms, leaning against the doorframe. I
didn't dare move or breath, so Hilary didn't see me.
"Well, she's my girlfriend. But I was wondering if I
could talk to you about you and Fid's friendship."
"What, was she too afraid to grow a pair and come talk to me
herself?"
"Hey, now listen. Fidelity is all worked up over your bitchy
attitude, and if you don't remember, she did try to talk to
you. You just didn't listen. But you know what? I would like
it if you listen to me."
It was silent for a minute and I shut my eyes tight, holding in
the dep breath that I collected as Drew was telling Hilary off.
She must of nodded or agreed to it, because I heard Drew thank
her, then walk into the house and the door shut behind him.
I let out a deep breath and moved over to sit against the
front door, staring out at the veiw in front of me. Hilary lived
in an apartment complex, so I looked at the different doors that
were connected to the building that she lived in.
A lady wearing a tight white business dress quickly walked
out of her apartment, locking the door behind her, then rushed to
her car. She drove quickly out of the parking lot and out on to
the street, clearly frazzled. I sighed and looked up at the
now-blue sky, little puffs of clouds floating through it. Then,
suddenly the clouds turned dark, and rain started to fall. I
smiled as the cold rain fell against my face, tickling me. I know
have learned to love rain, which was keeping Drew with me for
most of the time. The sky then turned lighter and lighter until
the clouds were almost white, just a little fuzz of rain falling
down. Then I heard footsteps coming up to the door, some muffled
voices also, and I stood up and rushed over to hide against the
brick wall, like I was not even there.
"So,"
Hilarys voice said as the door creaked over, then Drew walking
out and standing on the steps.
"So?"
"I get it now."
"Thought you would."
"Where's Fidelity? I'm going to go
apologize."
"Right here."
I was shaking my head no, but Drew leaned over and grabbed my arm
and pulled me out next to him, Hilary staring at me. I
couldn't stand to look up at her, I felt so embaressed and
exposed, even though I didn't know why.
"Fid?"
Hilarys voice was soft now, and I glanced up to neet her eyes.
Her eyes were full of rage and sadness, but now full of
understanding. She smiled and me and opened her arms, waiting for
a hug.
"Friends?"
I half smiled and walked into her arms, wrapping mine around her.
For a minute we just hugged each other tightly, then I pulled
away and walked back over to Drew.
"Friends."
She grinned and waved to us as she walked back into the house, a
smile framed on her face.
"How did you do that?"
I asked Drew as we turned around and walked back down the
sidewalk. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me
closer to him, making a light humming noise.
"Just showed her the truth."
I remembered the clear sky, then the quick hard storm, then back
to the light one.
"So, did she freak when she saw you disappear?"
He laughed and nodded, looking back up at the sky.
"Well, at that matters now is that she's back to being
your best friend."
I stopped walking and turned to look up at him, his sparkeling
eyes meeting mine.
"You know what?"
I asked him, putting a hand on my hip. He raised his eyesbrows
and shook his head, his eyes still never leaving mine. I smiled
and lifted my arms around his neck, both of his hands moving down
to my waist.
"I love you."
He looked down at me and grinned and leaned down to kiss me. Our
lips were in sync before he took one of my hands in his before
his lips left mine.
"I love you too."
We continued to walk together, our hands swinging between us as
our fingers interwined. As I looked over at Drew's face, his
straight jawline, light chocolate brown eyes, chestnut hair that
was jelled up in the front, I grinned. He was perfect for me, in
every way.
