CHAPTER 21

"Girls! WHAT is going on?" Detective Pernell stared at us from behind his desk.
We had just run about a mile to get to the station. Panting and out of breath, I started,
"Welll.." *pant* "We were just.." *pant* "at Emma's.. and" *pant*
"Okay, catch your breath," he said.
We took a moment to begin breathing normally, then I started again.
"So we were just at Emma's and she and Kendall confessed to kidnapping Braydon. Emma told us and then Kendall went like, psycho..then we kind of just ran away."
"What exactly did Emma say?"
Lauren jumped in. "Well, we were talking about Braydon and wondering if he'd be found, and Emma started freaking out, so she just fessed up and basically said, 'Kendall and I kidnapped Braydon and now we don't know what to do.'"
Detective Pernell nodded. "So.. you didn't ask where he was?"
"Uhhm.. no..," I said.
"That's alright," he said. "Well, I suppose we'll have to take them in for questioning. We don't have any evidence but they might confess. Who knows? Thanks girls. I'll keep the both of you posted. Looks like we've found our criminals. But.. what would they have done that for? Why? And where is he anyways? This is a real mess."
"Um.. Detective..?" Lauren asked.
"Mmm?"
"When are you gonna take them in?"
"Probably tomorrow. Why?"
"It's just that... I'm kind of scared now!" Lauren said.
"Me too!" I confessed.
The detective chuckled. "Nothing will happen. Thanks so much for your hard work. See you girls soon."
"You're welcome," Lauren and I said in unison, and we left.
Deciding to walk home, it was past dinnertime when we got back to my house and my parents demanded to know where I'd been. Lauren was sent home, and I finally decided to explain everything to my mom. She sat next to me on my bed, and it was the first real time in about 5 years that I had shared my feelings with her. It was so nice, and I couldn't believe she understood.
"I think you did the right thing, by telling the police, hun," she told me.
I nodded. "Thanks, Mom."
She gave me a big hug.
"Don't worry; everything will turn out fine," she promised.
And this time, I actually believed that it would.
